Going into play on Wednesday the Cubs had the benefit of knowing the Brewers were swept by the Mets and therefore the Cubs were 5 games up in the division. What did Cubs do with this information? Nothing. Literally nothing. The Cubs did not score and therefore did not win. With a golden opportunity to put more distance between them and the second place Brewers the Cubs came up short, AGAIN.
What made it worst was, I attended this game and it reminded me of the frustration I felt during last years playoff game against the Diamondbacks. The crowd wanted to cheer, the crowd tried to find things to cheer about, but over and over again the Cubs found ways to keep the crowd from cheering.
With one out and Cedeno, one of the few bright spots of the game going 2 for 2 with a walk, on second Soriano hits a shot to right and Cedeno is sent home. With a great throw and a great tag Cedeno is out, but here is the bad part; Soriano strolled to first and made no attempt to round it and go to second. Now correct me if I'm wrong but, shouldn't Soriano, knowing Cedeno was on second, have rounded second or made some attempt to divert a little of the defenses attention from home? If he had my feeling is Cedeno is safe, Soriano is potentially on second and there is only one out. Instead, two outs and Soriano on first.
The big bats like Lee, Ramirez, Soto and Soriano were stuck on stupid. With a strong wind coming in from left field each and everyone of these players appeared to be determine to go yard. Yes, Wigginton was ultimately able to hit a home run, but with Wrigley Field as your home park you should know that with a wind like that coming in your game plan has to change. Take pitches, make the opposing pitcher work, shorten your swing, go for the gaps and mix in some hit and run. In a phrase; manufacture runs.
The Cubs now head to Cincinnati and have put themselves in a position where they really have to win two out of three or they will find that the sleeping Brewers have woken up and are on their butts.
Pitching has kept the Cubs in many of the games this past month, now Zambrano is fighting
rotator cuff tendinitis, Harden is getting his rest, Lilly has been struggling and it is time for the bats to take over. That doesn't mean just home runs. We need to get consistent, timely hitting and get back on to the winning ways so the
W Flag can fly again!
Next Century Is Here.
