Rumors continue to fly that the Rays are looking to acquire a right-handed bat, who can play right field. Peter Gammons recently noted that Matt Murton of the Cubs or Xavier Nady of the Pirates could fill that need.

Both are nice players, but I'm not sure they would be any better than Jonny Gomes, particularly while operating with the same limited playing time as Gomes, who has power and is an integral part of the team's chemistry.

Gomes should get several starts next week in Cleveland against the Indians' left-handed starters. Perhaps the Rays should wait and see how Gomes does when given a chance to play before pulling the trigger on a deal for Murton or Nady
